Carry-On Capsule

Emilie has basically been living out of a suitcase for three weeks. From California to Miami to New Jersey, she's learned how to pack a suitcase or two. By the time her most recent trip came around, she was packing in JUST a carry-on—woohoo! A big accomplishment for anyone who loves to travel. Inspired by Emilie's journey, we present to you 10  tips for packing smarter and traveling lighter (making your life a whole lot easier).

  1. Plan Outfits in Advance: Overpacking is just lazy packing, and we know you took everything in your closet and threw it in a suitcase. Instead, coordinate your outfits to mix and match. Stick to a color palette that allows you to create multiple looks with fewer items.
  2. Choose Versatile Pieces: Pieces that can be dressed down during the day and dressed up at night (e.g. slip dresses).
  3. Pack Lightweight Fabrics: Choose lightweight, wrinkle-resistant fabrics (think anything from Veronica M, that stuff would never wrinkle). They take up less space and keep you looking fresh.
  4. ROLL, DON’T FOLD: Rolling clothes instead of folding them saves space AND minimizes wrinkles. This method also makes it easier to find items in your bag – there is nothing worse than emptying your whole suitcase on the hotel room floor looking for ‘that’ top.
  5. Use Packing Cubes: Life hack. Use different cubes for different categories, such as tops, bottoms, and accessories.
  6. Wear Heavier Items: Jackets, boots, etc.
  7. Limit Shoes: Stick to two pairs of shoes: one casual and one dressy. Shoes take up the most space, so choose wisely.
  8. Mini Toiletries: You don’t have to leave your favorite skin care at home! Buy those little travel-size containers and transfer your products to those.
  9. Accessorize: Accessories can change up an outfit without taking up much space.
  10. Leave Room for Souvenirs: DUH! Wherever we’re traveling, we’re also shopping. Always leave a little extra space for any treasures you may find.
